The Alabama football practiced Sunday afternoon for the second time in preparation for the BCS National Championship Game. Unlike yesterday's practice, the Tide donned full pads and worked outside.
Here's what you need to know:
No injuries occured during yesterday's workout. That's good news considering the team was coming off of two weeks of rest. You'll typically see a lot of muscle tweaks happen after a layoff, but Bama was good to go today.
Drew Davis was back today, after missing Saturday due to illness. He was back with the first unit working at his right tackle spot.
Dont'a Hightower is still sick, and missed his second straight practice. While he is still not contributing physically on the field, he has been a very vocal leader for the Alabama defense during practices and games. So getting him back onto the practice field soon is important.
Coach Saban had seemed to indicate in Saturday's post practice media conference that the team would be in shells again today, saying that he was going to treat these first few practices like it was the beginning of fall or spring practice. So it was a little surprising to see the squad in full pads today.
They did continue to work on fundamentals today, though I'm guessing there is a little more game-specific work on Texas happening after the media viewing period ends.
The intensity level has been high during the media viewing period, and we're hearing that it's gone even higher once the practice gets into the middle stages. That isn't always the case during bowl practice, when coaching staffs typically like to let some younger guys get work, or experiment with position changes.
Considering what is on the line in this particular bowl game, it really isn't a surprise that the team is taking a bit of a different approach. Coach Saban used the phrase, "this is a one game season" during Saturday's media conference.
Bama will practice again tomorrow, and we'll have our normal report.
And since I didn't point it out yesterday, I'll remind you again today.... I hate orange.
