Wednesday is the first real day of two-a-days for the Alabama football team. Technically the Tide practiced twice last Friday, but no player practiced more than once. That's not the case today, where the full squad worked this in full pads this morning, and will work again tonight.
Here's what you need to know:
Undra Billingsley attended practice, but did not participate. He missed Tuesday's practice after spending most of the day at DCH Regional Medical Center for what is being classified as a "non-football ailment". There is still no exact word on what that ailment is, and with it not being football related, there probably won't be.
Ryan Kelly missed his second consecutive practice, and there has been no word yet as to why. Once we hear something, we'll let you know.
No word yet on Duron Carter, despite the fact that we had heard that Wednesday would be the day. With another practice to go, that could still be the case, but as of right now, there's been no official word.
Arie Kouandjio was out of a black jersey, but did not participate in drills during the media viewing period. His injury, suffered during fan day, is not thought to be serious. The fact that he's no longer wearing black is a good indication of that.
Eddie Lacy and Brian Vogler were also still out of black, which is a good thing. They were both subjected to contact yesterday, and the fact that they were cleared for contact again today means that their health is becoming less of a concern. If they go again tonight and tomorrow without black jerseys, we'll stop talking about them.
Blake Sims was also out of black and working with the running backs. He did, as per usual, work with the quarterbacks some. At this point, I think it's a safe bet that this will be the case for him at every practice. So unless we tell you differently, assume from this point going forward that Blake is wearing white and working with Burton Burns, but also taking some reps with Jim McElwain.
Christion Jones was once again splitting time between running back and wide receiver. He was primarily at running back the last two days, but got work in at receiver both days. Today he was primarily with the wide receivers, but got some time in with the running backs.
William Ming was with the jack linebackers for the third consecutive day. If he's still with the jacks after Saturday's scrimmage, then you can pretty much expect him to stay there.
It looks like Cyrus Kouandjio is already making his charge for playing time. He worked with the second unit at left tackle today, which allowed the staff to move Alfred McCullough back to right tackle - where he worked with the second unit. I am not convinced that they will burn his redshirt for second team duty, but in an age where you expect most elite players to leave after their junior year, using a redshirt is less important for a guy that projects to be elite. They did redshirt D.J. Fluker two years ago, but he was transitioning from defense to offense. Cyrus is moving from right tackle to left, which is a big move, but not in the same neighborhood as defensive tackle to offensive tackle.
DeAndrew White continues to be the guy most likely to fill in for Darius Hanks during the first two weeks, and likely stay in the top three rotation after Hanks comes back. At this point he's been more consistent than both Hanks and Maze, though it's not a surprise to see a young guy trying to earn playing time be a little more "on" during practice than two guys who know that they are going to play.
Bama will practice again at 7:30 tonight and we'll have our normal report.
